Introduction to mcponce

[!NOTE] Project Status: Alpha (v0.2.x) mcponce is currently in active Alpha development. Features and developer utilities are functional and tested, but APIs and internal interfaces are subject to refinement before a v1.0.0 stable release. We welcome community testing and feedback.

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard created by Anthropic that allows large language models (LLMs) like Claude Desktop, Cursor, and IDE extensions to securely interact with external tools, resources, and custom services.

While the official @modelcontextprotocol/sdk provides core protocol primitives, developers building real-world MCP servers face common architectural challenges:

  1. Subprocess Hell: Traditional stdio servers launch a fresh Node.js subprocess for every single client window, duplicating memory and database connections.
  2. Boilerplate Overload: Setting up input schemas, timeouts, cancel signals, retries, and caching requires hundreds of lines of repetitive glue code.
  3. Blackbox Debugging: When an LLM fails to execute a tool or sends stringified numbers, debugging why the call failed is cumbersome without built-in telemetry.
  4. Port Conflicts: Running local HTTP MCP servers across multiple workspaces causes port collisions unless complex dynamic port discovery is built manually.

🎯 The mcponce Solution #

mcponce is an all-in-one framework built on top of Hono and the official @modelcontextprotocol/sdk designed specifically to eliminate these pain points:

ChallengeTraditional MCP Servermcponce Server
Instance ModelMulti-process stdio spawnsSingle shared background daemon (via Unitup)
TransportStdio pipes or basic SSEHigh-speed Streamable HTTP / SSE with full CORS
Input ParsingStrict, errors on stringified typesSmart automatic coercion ("42" ➔ 42, "true" ➔ true)
ConcurrencyUncontrolled parallel executionConfigurable FIFO mutex queues (sequential: true)
PerformanceDynamic runtime recompilationPre-compiled Zod schemas & hot in-memory LRU cache
ObservabilityConsole logs onlyPrometheus (/metrics) & JSON Telemetry (/analytics)
Developer CLIRequires full LLM client to testmcponce call <tool> directly in terminal

🏗️ Core Philosophy #

1. Single-File, Zero-Configuration #

You write your tools in a single TypeScript or JavaScript file. Everything—HTTP routing, SSE streaming, background daemon spawning, argument coercion, caching, and health diagnostics—lives inside that single file.

2. High Performance by Default #

mcponce is benchmarked with Vitest Tinybench:

  • Mutex acquire/release: 1,800,000+ ops/sec (~600 ns)
  • Smart input coercion: 800,000+ ops/sec (1.2 µs)
  • Cached tool responses: 5,500+ ops/sec (0.18 ms)
  • End-to-end HTTP scrape: 1,000+ ops/sec (< 1 ms)

3. Graceful Resilience #

Every tool invocation is protected with:

  • Configurable per-tool or server-level timeouts (timeoutMs).
  • Automatic client cancellation propagation via AbortSignal.
  • Exponential backoff retries for transient network or database errors.
  • Automatic stale state detection and crash recovery.

Next Steps #

  • Proceed to Quickstart to install mcponce and run your first server.
  • Explore the Architecture to see how the Hono HTTP server and Unitup daemon coordinate.
  • Read Comparison & Alternatives for an objective comparison with the official SDK, FastMCP, and proxies.
